Treatment of Afghans in Iran
This video is very disturbing, it claims to show a group of Afghans being humiliated and ridiculed by Iranian police. If true, this video leads credence to the allegations regarding inhumane treatment of Afghans in Iranian prisons. In May this year protesters in Kabul decried the execution of Afghans in Iran according to Afghan Foreign Ministry 4 to 5 thousand Afghans are languishing in Iranian jails. In 2009 the Iranian authorites deported around 1000 children to the Afghan province of Herat, most of these children were economic migrants and according to UNICEF were at the risk of facing abuse. While it is understandable that rising economic pressures within Iran are forcing the society at large to act this way, but as a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, it is the job of the Government of Iran to correct these injustices against Afghan Refugees.
Iran’s regard for UN’s conventions in its own backyard, will only make its case stronger when it invokes the same in the case of Israel.
